Library of Congress - The mission of the Library is to "sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations." According to its website, the collections include "approximately fifteen million books, thirty-nine million manuscripts, thirteen million photographs, four million maps, more than three and a half million pieces of music, and more than half a million motion pictures. The Library's collection of more than 5,600 incunabula (books printed before 1500) is the largest in the Western Hemisphere and its collections of maps, atlases, newspapers, music, motion pictures, photographs, and microforms are probably the largest in the world. In addition, the Library holds newspapers, prints, posters, drawings, talking books, technical reports, videotapes and disks, computer programs, and other audio, visual, and print materials." Cumberland County Historical Society - I had the chance to visit the CCHS library on a trip through central Pennsylvania. Wow. My niece preferred Hershey Park, but I found enough excitement in the society's Hamilton Library. Check out their surname index page. They really have thoroughly indexed their holdings - I found not only birth records and court records for my Natchers, but pew rentals and newspaper mentions like "William Natcher's barn burned down last night."

Diocese of Pittsburgh

McKeesport Heritage Center - The website just gives basic information about the organization. If you're looking for relatives who lived in the McKeesport, PA area, these folks can be very helpful. For instance, they have the McKeesport Daily News on microfilm - all of it - and an obituary index to help locate names. Other holdings include city directories, yearbooks, maps, cemetery data, etc. The Center houses a collection of McKeesport memorabilia donated by area residents. Visit if you can and definitely become a member - the preservation of our heritage requires our support.

Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society - The Society's extensive holdings are housed in the Pennsylvania Department of the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh. Plan to spend at least a whole day if you're in the area. Knowlegeable volunteers can help point you in the right direction and they're familiar with the library's holdings as well. Membership includes their quarterly journal and newsletter in addition to discounts on purchases. I bought my copy of The History of Allegheny County while I was there the first time - the membership fee nearly paid for itself with the discount.
