John was a coal miner. He worked for the Niells of Elizabeth, PA. He put the first coal mine in the 4th pool for the Niells at Coal Center. John and brother Robert bought 3/4 section of land sale(332 acres) in Iowa. It was sold without their knowledge and the University of Iowa now sits on that property.

John declared his intent to become a US citizen in the district court in Allegheny county on September 26, 1884. He petitioned for citizenship on September 24, 1886. Daniel Potts swore that John had resided in the US for at least five years.
